Grader: An alternate approach to changing points

In this video, MyITLab provides a thorough step-by-step process for changing assignment points in drop boxes. Through my own experience, however, I recently uncovered an alternate solution that may work better in some cases: a combination of calculated and total columns can also be used to achieve needed “balance,” simply by using the calculated columns to calculate the average of similar types of assignments. Think of all trainings as one calculated field, all grader projects as another calculated field, and so on. Simply create a total column using those calculated fields and assign proper weight to each field. It works like a weighted average.

NOTE: Make sure that your total column is at 100% (it is possible after all, to create a total column that is <100%).

All fields used in the calculation must be assigned with a due date for the calculation to work properly. Please keep in mind that any late assignments will have a grade of 0. From the gradebook view, there is no way to determine whether there is a late submission or not. It can be checked/accepted/penalized through View All/Submission from the option button at the top of the Gradebook column.

To determine whether the calculated column works correctly, just switch to Raw Score. If denominator is the same for all students, then everything should be fine.

Do you have any suggestions on changing points?
